Tiger Woods of The Winks

Posted by John Rothchild

Self-confessed nerd Larry Kahn of Miami is world tiddlywinks singles champ 19 times over; his win at age 53 (2006), makes him the oldest. Tiddlywinks goes back to the 1890s, a boring decade in which people amused themselves by flipping coin-sized discs into spittoon-sized pots. This led to serious betting, a thick rule book, and a new lingo: “squidger”, the master disc used to launch smaller discs; “squopping”, etc. An MIT graduate, Kahn turned to tiddly for excitement, discovered a talent for it. To keep his hands in winking shape, he tends his garden in Miami. His motto: “winning isn’t everything, but losing sucks”.
